Gertie A. Abernathy, 85, formerly of 302 Union died at 4:26 a.m. June 5, 1974 at the Tall Trees Nursing Home. She had been a patient since Feb. 5 and had been ill 2 years. Born 2 Nov 1888 in Cates, she was the daughter of Joseph & Emaline Barker Cates. On 24 June 1905, she was married to Fred S. Abernathy who died 10 March 1942. She finished out the term her husband held as trustee of Fulton Twp. after his death. She later worked at the Courthouse Cafe at Covington. Mrs. Abernathy was a member of the 1st Church of Christ at Covington, the Willing Workers Sunday School class, a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star at Veedersburg, the Troy Wabash Women's Republican Club and the Royal Neighbors of America. Survivors include, 4 daughters, Nrs. Wilma Banks of Greenwood; Mrs. Roy (Wanda) Summers of Kingman, Mrs. Melvin (Dorothy) Cotterell and Mrs. Darrell (Ruth ) of Covington and Mrs. Clarence (Lola) Pugh of Tarpon Springs, Fla; a 1/2 brother, J. Bryant Starkey of RR Covington, 9 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A son, a daughter, a brother, 2 1/2 brothers and a grandson preceded her in death. Services were at 2 p.m. Friday at the Deverter Funeral Home (formerly Hegg) with Rev. James Daniels officiating. Burial in Snoddy's cemetery.   ---kz

COVINGTON – Mrs. Gertie A. Abernathy, 85, of Covington, died at 4:26 a.m. Wednesday in Tall Trees Nursing Home. She had resided at 302 Union St. She was a native of Cates, born Nov. 2, 1888, to Joseph and Emaline Barker Cates. She married Fred S. Abernathy. Mrs. Abernathy was a member of First United Church of Christ and its Willing Workers Class here, of the local Royal Neighbors of American Lodge and Troy-Wabash Women’s Republican Club and a 50-year member of the Veedersburg OES. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Wilma Banks of Greenwood, Mrs. Roy (Wanda) Summers of Kingman, and Mrs. Mervin (Dorothy) Cotterell and Mrs. Darrell (Ruth) Bever of Covington; three half-sisters, Mrs. Homer (Vila) Howard of Covington, Mrs. E. E. (Marguerite) Smith of Attica and Mrs. Clarence (Lola) Pugh of Tarpon Springs, Fla.; a half-brother, J. Bryant Starkey of near Covington; nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Her husband, two children, a brother, sister, two half-brothers and a grandson are deceased. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in DeVerter Funeral Home here with the Rev. James Daniels officiating and burial in Snoddy’s Cemetery near Covington. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Thursday.   -– jlr
